Don't know how you are about spilling the secrets to your successes, but why not share your deck ideas and strategies with other forum members?

Hey you should thank me, I expose you to tournament quality decks on a regular basis. If you want to become a master of type II standard what better way then to practice against the same decks that you would face from a professional at a PTQ.

In fact I'm burning up a Jund A++ level deck tonight to unleash on you people Friday Wink

I was kidding of course, Warren.

I actually need to update my decks a little more, maybe create some new ones. They wouldn't necessarily be T2, but...

What goes well with Siege of Towers (1R, Sorcery, Replicate 1R, Target Mountian becomes 3/1 creature that's still a land)?

When Warren first started Magic he was running a very budget Jund-token style deck.

Ran things like

Mycoloth
Sprouting Thrinax
Scarland Thrinax
Deathbringer Throcter
Hissing Iguana
Jund Charm
etc. and for the price of the deck (I'm guessing under $30 for everything) it was quite effective.

PostSubject: Re: Deck and Strategy   Deck and Strategy EmptyTue Nov 03, 2009 6:39 pm

http://www.essentialmagic.com//Decks/View.asp?ID=706287

There is a link to my old budget jund deck. It focuses on the devour mechanic. It's a highly evaisve deck as you can use the scarland thrinax to sacrifice any creatures that would be destoryed by any other means, thus adding 1/1 tokens to the scarland and causing your oppenet to whiff as you remove the blocker after it's been declared.

Then with hissing inguanas out every time a creature dies they take a damge, this can add up very quickly when you start generating tokens, soon even their attacks will harm them as you chump with tokens dealing damage to them.

The deck also runs jund charms to sweep the board of any threats after you've devoured your own creatures and also to put 1/1 counters on mycoloth if you want to play him but have no creatures to devour atm

Depending on how much you want to spend you can move it up a teir by replacing the boarderposts with duel lands.

After that add a sarkahn vol

After that...ummm well after that just make a pro-jund deck as the lands are really the only expensive addition that makes sense in this deck.

PostSubject: Re: Deck and Strategy   Deck and Strategy EmptyFri Nov 06, 2009 12:47 am

Posted this on the Wizards Community in my blog. I just want to see a variety of opinions.

Quote :
Land
20x Plains
3x Kabira Crossroads

Creature
Steppe Lynx
Stormfront Pegasus
2x Kor Skyfisher
2x Kor Aeronaut
2x White Knight
2x Noble Vestige
2x Griffin Sentinel
Razorfoot Griffin
Emeria Angel
Iona, Shield of Emeria

Other
2x Windborne Charge
Planar Cleansing
2x Glorious Charge
2x Pitfall Trap
3x Safe Passage
Arrow Volley Trap
2x Sunspring Expedition
Luminarch Ascension
3x Nimbus Wings
Indestructibility
Trusty Machete
Trailblazer's Boots
Gorgon Flail

So far, Nimbus Wings and my non-fliers are 100% going to make their way out. I've had one suggestion for Lifelink, and I'm thinking I need to get my hands on some Emeria, the Sky Ruin.

What are your thoughts?

Painlands to maximize landfall on lynx and Emeria Angel. You'll be able to use the kor who returns a permant to your hand to grab a land also so pretty solid there although I can't say a baneslayer wouldn't be a better choice to replace Emeria if you can afford her, I just don't see enough landfall mechinics in here to justifty emeria

Honor of the pure maybe, at 2 mana for 1/1 buff to all white in a mono deck you can't miss.

Noble Vestige seems out of place and not a particularly strong 3 drop are you trying to use his dmg prevention to protect you for your ascension? If so you may want to consider splashing and going for some blue control or green for fog otherwise it could be difficult to protect your life to get your counters and keep a board presence since you'll have to block often and your creatures dont' have high defense, maybe some walls even, splash blue for wall of deniel, unsummons etc

White knight seems more like a sideboard choice to me not sure where he fits into the theme of this deck, but i'm not entirely sure what the theme is yet

Not a fan of trailblazer boots since you should have enough flying evasion with white to get the job done or use brave the elements to gain prot for a turn and roll on them

Same with glorious charge/nimbus wings, i'd look at using Armored Ascension instead since you're going mono anyway and can cash in on having all those plains

Looks like I'm needing to look for some Honors, then. I traded one away a while ago...

I made some rough changes last night, such as taking out all 3 non-flying creatures, the Vestiges, even some of the rares I want to keep in a good condition. I want to stay Type-2 if possible, but I have a feeling that I'd need to dip into something older to make this really interesting to play with.

I'd try to define the tempo of your deck as well. Going mono white I'd say you're going to hit your stride mid-to late game. The lynx is your only true aggro card and you are going to be buffing relatively weak creatures with evasion.

As such 4 harms way would be a solid choice to prevent getting rushed down in the earlier game and to take out some of the lowbies you'll be getting pegged with turns 1-4 and protect your life to get your ascension going

PostSubject: Re: Deck and Strategy   Deck and Strategy EmptySat Nov 07, 2009 4:40 am

I think your mono white deck lacks focus. There is little synergy between your cards.

Having mostly small cheap creatures, and then 2 big angels seems strange. It looks like it may be difficult to get your Luminarch Ascension online since you will probably be trading damage quite often until late game. I'm not sure what you would want to equip your equipment to.

If you want to play an inexpensive mono white deck, soldiers is the most cohesive archetype. Kor Skyfisher, Veteran Swordsmith, Kazandu Blademaster are all excellent low cost soldiers that you can build your deck around. Makindi Shieldmate is both a soldier and an ally that could work in this deck. Oblivion Rings for the obligatory removal, Journey to Nowhere and Path to Exile if you feel you need even more.

As for rares, Captain of the Watch and Honor of the Pure fit very well. Martial Coup and Conqueror's Pledge are both fun soldier themed spells. With so many soldiers you may even want to consider Coat of Arms. Elspeth and Ajani would be terrific, but bump the cost of building this deck up significantly.

4x Kor Skyfisher
4x Makindi Shieldmate
4x Veteran Swordsmith
4x Kazandu Blademaster
4x Captain of the Watch

4x Oblivion Ring
4x Conqueror's Pledge
4x Honor of the Pure
3x Ajani Goldmane

3x Emeria, the Sky Ruin
22x Plains

Testing would probably alter this preliminary deck list quite a lot. Cheaper cards could easily sub in until you decide whether or not you like this deck.

PostSubject: Re: Deck and Strategy   Deck and Strategy EmptySat Nov 07, 2009 6:19 am

@Qarrios

Without running any fetchlands I would say you should cut Steppe Lynx for sure, at most he's going to be a 2/3 and potentially many turns just sit there as a 0/1.

I think Sam has a decent list going there, although I'd probably cut a few of the higher casting cost spells, probably -2 Captain fo the Watch or -1 Watch -1 Pledge. If you're running Conqueror's Pledge it can work quite nicely with Day of Judgment (or Martial Coup).

Kor Hookmaster + Kor Skyfisher has the potential to work well together, plus the Skyfisher and Kazandu Blademaster can work well once you have a 2nd Blademaster out (to bounce and build up +1/+1 counters on the first Blademaster).

Knight of the White Orchid is another popular include in mono-white aggro, it helps you get your mana out faster and can actually allow you to drop your land count a little bit, depending on your deck curve.

Also in my humble opinion any mono-white aggro deck is crazy not to run 4x Brave the Elements. This card is so good, you can use it on an alpha strike to get through tons of damage or in defense against creature attacks or sweeper spells.

In the end I'd probably go with Soldiers as well, something like:

4 Elite Vanguard
4 Kazandu Blademaster
4 Kor Aeronaut
4 Veteran Swordsmith
3 Knight of the White Orchid (or Kor Hookmaster)
2 Bomb-creatures, either Captain of the Watch/Baneslayer Angel/any of the other Angels you want to run

4 Honor of the Pure
4 Path to Exile
4 Brave the Elements
3 Conqueror's Pledge

2 Ajani Goldmane or Elspeth (could drop these out and run more creatures, Kor Skyfishers or Hookmasters if you prefer)

22 Plains (or maybe 21+1 or 20+2 Emeria Sky Ruin)

Captain of the Watch is so good in an all soldier deck I believe she is an auto 4-of in this deck. 6 mana for four creatures and a buff to all your existing creatures, all in one card? game breaking.

I disagree with the idea of cutting lands from this deck, although maybe playtesting would prove me wrong. Seems to me you definitely want to hit a land drop every turn on your way up to a pledge or a captain. For that reason Knight of the White Orchid is usually irrelevant, especially if you are on the play, since you shouldn't be behind on lands very often.

Day of Judgment (Martial Coup) to a Pledge is a sick combo. However, I don't think you will want to sweep your own board very often considering most of your creatures buff one another. The choice is up to you.

I often prefer Oblivion Ring to Path to Exile because the ring has more versatility, but it depends on your meta.

Brave the Elements is a great card that I overlooked.

I'm not disagreeing with the Soldier version of the decklist, but the vital point was to have mostly flying creatures. It's a revenge thing, after being raped by flying vampires too many times recently... lol
I'll look at what I can fit in for removal.

PostSubject: Re: Deck and Strategy   Deck and Strategy EmptyMon Nov 09, 2009 9:14 am

Sam, the only reason I don't recommend running 4x Captain of the Watch (or any 6-cost spell) in this type of deck is that it has no mana acceleration whatsoever, so if you miss a land drop or end up with 2-3 captains in your hand early game, it's going to really hurt your board position. I think Captain's a good card in its own right, and the fact that it creates the 3x 1/1 soldiers somewhat offsets the fact that it will be removed 99% of the time as soon as it hits the board, unless you're waiting for T7 when you can cast it and keep one mana open for a Brave the Elements or Harms way or whatever, but then it's taking you even longer to get the card into play.

I guess it's just a matter of playstyle though. I prefer decks with a lower curve in general, typically running most cards at 1-4 CMC with maybe 2-3 cards that are 5-6CMC tops. I've seen other people have great success with more mid-late game decks, so really it's a personal choice. You're definitely correct though in that if you run Captains or Conqueror's Pledges you don't want to miss a land drop, but sometimes even when running 23-25 lands it still happens; personally I try to include KoTWOrchard in most mono-white decks I play. He's almost always relevent on the draw and can make-up a missed land drop. Plus has first strike which is always great.

Quarrios, sorry to say that if your bane is vampires you might want to avoid mono-white as a counter; even with White Knight/Devout Lightcaster/Celestial Purge the vamps still have Malakir Bloodwitch which can pretty much single handedly deal with white decks. Plus they will run Gatekeeper of Malakir as a way to deal with your Black-prot creatures. I've had some success against vamps with my mono-white soldier deck using the aforementioned black-prot cards, but its quite quick, curving out around 3-mana.

8 creatures at 2cc and 8 more at 3cc means you are going to be pressuring constantly. Your opponent is going to have to start dealing with your creatures early and often so hopefully by the time your captain hits the board he's run out of removal. Especially when the buffs start stacking up. A couple of swordsmiths and honors will make your soldiers huge.

I like having big finishers somewhere in my deck that I can draw consistently. With no way to draw extra cards in this deck, I feel a higher ratio of bombs is a good idea. But, maybe you are right and 3 captains and 3 pledges would be better. The only way to know would be to playtest.

PostSubject: Re: Deck and Strategy   Deck and Strategy EmptyMon Nov 09, 2009 8:20 pm

Whites central themes have always been

1. cheaply costed creatures boosted by global buffs
2. mid teir removal (path, o-ring, tranq)
3. mid teir evasion (cheap flyers)
4. top teir life gain / damage negation ( holy day, life link, soul warden )

As such you should try to stick to one or two of these themes if you're not planning to splash any other colors as this is where the cards are going to take you regardless of your intentions.

Solders are a very conventional and successful archetype as they focus on #1

Angels can be successful also, but without the mana accel from green or control from blue you'll have to focus on #2 and #4 to protect yourself until you can cast your baneslayer or activate your accession

Also I posted some other ideas as well for it.

I think your deck is crazy good and so it's difficult to make suggestions.

I think the Overruns aren't really necessary, since the amount of beasts you can create will overwhelm you opponent anyways. The Behemoth Sledges are giving trample also. I would swap in some removal, probably Path to Exile.

Oran-Reif the Vastwood would be perfect for your deck. It has such great synergy with green token producers and Garruk. Imagine creating a couple beasts from the baloths, Oran-Riefing twice, untapping both with Garruk, then Oran-Reifing twice more. Next turn you use Garruk's ultimate for some 11/11 trampling nastiness. Might be worth adding a third Garruk.

Yeah I found the Overruns to be a little iffy at best, these are usually the cards I side out for Vines of Vastwood or Path to Exile.

I also just started working on a Green/Blue variation.

As for the Oran Reif... it's a little tricky to use in my deck and can only be played in two ways:
Either A: I actually draw it
Or B: I use Knight of the Reliquary and search it out in place of a forest or something...

Either way it's hard to connect it with a Baloth summon because you usually want to have the land hitting when the Baloth is out there already. (Oran Rief comes into play tapped so you can't use it on the turn the Baloth is summoned.)

But hey, it gives my Lotus Cobras a nudge, but basically I'm still at no real advantage for the turn it's played since for that turn I didn't get the mana from that land as well.

All in all it's kinda iffy at best. Bust it's all in your play style I guess. Also I have to switch out my already Land Heavy count... scratch
