For scars of mirrodin so far we have,

Elspeth is confirmed, possibly green due to new artwork
A new planeswalker named Koth
Karn the silver golem in some way, shape or form
Tezzeret is a possibility
And also due to new artwork, speculation that Venser will be returning.

This is also confirmed:

Memoricide - 3B
Sorcery - Rare

Name a nonland card. Search target players graveyard, hand, and library for any number of cards with that name and exile them. Then that player shuffles his or her library.

HOOOOOOOOOOOLY Shit.

A decent...nay, a good red planeswalker? My brain is so full of fuck.

Too bad a lot of RDW's guts are rotating because this guy seems really sick.

Koth looks really bad. When the hype dies, he'll be another Chandra.

Let's do the Planeswalker test. In order to be playable, a planeswalker must be at least two of the following:
1. Converted mana cost of 4 or less, check.
2. Able to defend himself the turn he comes down, fail.
3. Generate continuous card advantage, fail.

Koth is extremely narrow, only playable in a deck with mostly (all) mountains. In order to gain loyalty, you make your land vulnerable to creature removal. Red decks don't play blockers, so he will not last more than 1-2 turns in play and will never go ultimate. What does red need ramp for after turn four?

A red planeswalker needs to have a direct damage ability and a library manipulation/card draw ability to be of any use to a RDW strategy.

I agree that Koth is narrow,

But venser fails all three of your tests... does he not?

Gideon fails a few as well.

So does elspeth.

So... Jace is the only good planeswalker Sam?

Koth actually seems pretty decent. I mean i get what you're saying Sam, and I hate to jump on the whole "NEW CARDS R DOMG SO GOOD" bandwagon but I can't imagine this card not seeing any competitive play.

For an aggressive style deck like RDW, it seems pretty solid. It's true that you put your lands at risk but it just gives red another way to convert resources into aggression. You spend 4 mana to essentially play a slightly overcosted Ball Lightning type creature sans trample, but *IF* Koth survives, it's pure value. Same goes for his -2. Cast him for 4, play his -2, to generate the 4 mana you just spent, cast a Kargan Dragonlord + level or bolt or whatever, and if Koth survives, again you're getting value (assuming this is on an empty board).

Red can do a fairly good job at keeping creatures off the board on the opponents side, so the chances of getting two+ activations isn't out of the question. Not the best walker but I wouldn't say he's bad.

Giddeon and Elspeth can both protect themselves the turn they come into play by either destroying a tapped creature or making a blocker, respectively. They both provide continuous card advantage by forcing your opponent to deal with them before they can deal with you (forcing them to spend cards to respond to your card).

Venser is another planeswalker that won't live up to the hype.

PostSubject: Re: "Scars of Mirrodin" Spoilers and Known Info   "Scars of Mirrodin" Spoilers and Known Info EmptyFri Sep 10, 2010 9:39 am

Making a 4/4 haste with NO EVASION for 4 mana is pretty terrible. Overcosted, easily chumpable, and possibly setting you back a land drop if it gets destroyed. Now you're tapped out without any blockers to defend your mana and card investment. Elemental Appeal is better card for the same investment.

Koth's -2 only pays for itself manawise if you have 4 mountains in play which even RDW rarely does with all the non-basics it maindecks. If you do manage to get the mana returned to cast a creature or a spell you could have just cast that creature or spell without Koth's help, so all you gain is a 1 loyalty 'walker who's +1 isn't that strong.

Koth's place is in a "big red" strategy focused on casting large splashy threats such as inferno titan or comet storm. Unfortunatley that deck isn't currently competitive. Koth reminds me of Nissa Revane, only useable in 1 kind of deck, and said deck might not be very popular depending on the meta.

If you're playing a RDW style deck with koth odds are they won't have any creatures to retaliate on your walker with after you convert and swing with your mountain on turn 4 because you've been blowing them all up or they've been getting thrown under the bus as chumps.

Also he's out of bolt range when you start with his +1 so odds are he'll survive at least 1 turn unguarded meaning they're going to have commit an attacker or two leaving them without blocks or giving you a turn with 8 mana if you decide to cash him in next turn.

Is koth narrow? yeah for sure, imo his value is ENTIRELY DEPENDENT on the quality of mono red cards that are released in the next couple sets.

Yah, sure I agree with most of that Sam. I'm not saying he's the red Jace by any means lol. I guess I just see him as a step in the right direction compared to all the terrible red planeswalkers released up until now.

Plus noone said he has to be played in mono-red. His abilities look pretty nice for some kind of GR deck, perhaps something similar to the current Titan Valakut deck. T3 drop Koth, swing for 4 if you want, or T4 drop Koth and tap your combination of forests/mountains in such a way that his -2 gives you enough to ramp that turn. His abilities have decent synergy with Primeval Titan as well.

It's too early to tell the effectivenes of the card when the good majority of the current set hasn't been spoiled yet. I'd rather reserve judgement until I have more info, but as of right now, I consider Koth of the Hammer to be fine.

There's also an official minisite up for the new Mirrodin which has lore and some card artwork that hasn't been officially spoiled.

So was was looking at the 1st post in the thread. From what I can see in the spoiler so far there is no Karn. I've heard alot of other people talk in the shop about Karn making a come back. Are all the cards revealed now in the visual spoiler or are there a couple more to go ? I'm guessing that the spoiler is done and Karn is not coming back, at least not in this set.

The entire Visual Spoiler is up, so Karn will be in one of the other two sets this block, if at all.

I don't imagine that they'd hide anything more from us with the Pre-release this weekend.
