PostSubject: Changes to Extended Format   Changes to Extended Format EmptySat Jun 19, 2010 4:46 am

From Wizards of the Coast:
June 18 2010 DCI Banned & Restricted List Announcement

Quote :
Announcement Date: June 18, 2010
Effective Date: July 1, 2010
Magic Online Effective Date: July 14, 2010 (after the scheduled downtime)

Magic: The Gathering Tournament Rules Change: Extended
On July 1, 2010, the following sets will leave the Extended format: Ninth Edition, Mirrodin, Darksteel, Fifth Dawn, Champions of Kamigawa, Betrayers of Kamigawa, Saviors of Kamigawa, Ravnica: City of Guilds, Guildpact, Dissension, and Coldsnap. From that point forward, the Extended format will include approximately four years of Magic sets instead of seven.

At that time, the following sets will be legal in the Extended format: Time Spiral, Planar Chaos, Future Sight, Tenth Edition, Lorwyn, Morningtide, Shadowmoor, Eventide, Shards of Alara, Conflux, Alara Reborn, Magic 2010, Zendikar, Worldwake, and Rise of the Eldrazi.

With the upcoming release of Scars of Mirrodin, the following sets will leave the Extended format: Time Spiral, Planar Chaos, Future Sight, and Tenth Edition. One year's worth of releases will leave Extended with every subsequent fall Magic set.

Extended
Sword of the Meek is banned.
Hypergenesis is banned.

This "super-standard" format looks like fun. I will have to start looking for deck ideas. It will be featured at Pro Tour Amsterdam this September.

Shocked That is alot of cards rotating out. I guess when they say they are making changes, they mean they are changing how they normally rotate out cards in extended. I can't ever remember them making 2 rotations in 1 year. I thought they would make the rotation in October like they do with Standard.

They haven't changed how sets are rotated, the have reduced the number of sets in extended by half. The usual rotation will occur very October.

After the Oct rotation this year (in 4 months), the extended legal sets will be:

Lorwyn, Morningtide, Shadowmoor, Eventide, Shards of Alara, Conflux, Alara Reborn, M10, Zendikar, Worldwake, Rise of the Eldrazi, M11, and Scars of Mirrodin

That is the extended that interests me. Depending on SOM, I may prefer it to standard because of the increased variety of quality cards and deck variations.

It seems that instead of losing 4 sets from standard due to rotation this October, I am actually going to gain 6 sets when I start to play extended.

Hopefully there's some local support for this format. Will make it that much better to invest in.

I'm interested in playing this format!! Hell, to get cards for it we could have Lorwyn drafts and stuff like that!

I like the idea of drafting lorywn again. I would rather play extended than standard. This would allow me to keep my discard deck.

Having never drafted lorywn, shadowmoor, eventide, and morning tide thsi sounds like a good idea.

Guess they finally realized that Shadowmoor and Eventide were awesome.

It only took them what... a year or 2?

Stupid idiots...

This was my idea before they changed to the current Standard version!

Until the beginning of October, i think one of the best decks is going to be the Living End deck. It work like Hypergenisis, but isn't so easily breakable. After that I think the top contenders are going to be Faeries and a variant of UW control. The other decks will include Elves, Kithkin, BW tokens, 5 color control, a RG aggro deck, and Changeling Allies is at least going to have some very thorough testing done to it. Most of the break-out decks are going to just be rehashes of old decks with new cards, ie. Monument Faeries or Umbra Rock.
