| Spawning Breath {1}{R} Instant Spawning Breath deals 1 damage to target creature or player. Put a 0/1 colorless Eldrazi Spawn creature token onto the battlefield. It has "Sacrifice this creature: Add {1} to your mana pool."
* Some of the instants and sorceries that create Eldrazi Spawn tokens, such as Spawning Breath, have targets. If all the spell's targets are illegal by the time it resolves, the entire spell is countered. You won't get any Eldrazi Spawn tokens.
Right out of the ROTE Card FAQ
As usual I knew better. Without proper judges at events every rules dispute turns into a popularity contest with whoever can get more of his buddies to chime in wins.
My opponent receiving that ill-gotten spawn token basically cost me the first match and all because that kid who calls himself "mister violence" (LOLWTF?) spoke up the loudest. In the future when rule disputes erupt lets cover each others asses. If a mistake is going to be made I'd rather it's a stranger who suffers the consequences not you or I

| Agreed. - Quote :
- 608.2b If the spell or ability specifies targets, it checks whether the targets are still legal. A target that’s no longer in the zone it was in when it was targeted is illegal. Other changes to the game state may cause a target to no longer be legal; for example, its characteristics may have changed or an effect may have changed the text of the spell. If the source of an ability has left the zone it was in, its last known information is used during this process. The spell or ability is countered if all its targets, for every instance of the word “target,” are now illegal. If the spell or ability is not countered, it will resolve normally, affecting only the targets that are still legal. If a target is illegal, the spell or ability can’t perform any actions on it or make the target perform any actions.
Example: Aura Blast is a white instant that reads, “Destroy target enchantment. Draw a card.” If the enchantment isn’t a legal target during Aura Blast’s resolution (say, if it has gained protection from white or left the battlefield), then Aura Blast is countered. Its controller doesn’t draw a card.
Example: Plague Spores reads, “Destroy target nonblack creature and target land. They can’t be regenerated.” Suppose the same animated land is chosen both as the nonblack creature and as the land, and the color of the creature land is changed to black before Plague Spores resolves. Plagues Spores isn’t countered because the black creature land is still a legal target for the “target land” part of the spell. Unfortunately, I couldn't remember the quote at the time. Sorry.

| Yeah, too many times I have played in tournaments and listened to "experts" come up with rulings on cards that I don't agree with. They go on the internet and Google the card and say that in some forum on some website, "this is how the card works" Or, as in this situation, its a popularity contest and whom ever is the loudest wins. This is one of the bad things in Magic that I hate. Those that are correct don't always win. For those people that claim they know better I always challenge them to find the official ruling on the Wizards website. For me all that matters is what is in the official rules or on the Wizards website. Nothing else that you find anywhere else really matters. I consider all other websites to be speculation or a popularity contest, ie. pissing match. | |
